11. Treating Severe Disease and Illness

When observing Symptoms and Signs, as long as there are Symptoms of poor stamina, it is “severe disease and illness” ( 重 病 ). Severe disease and illness indicate serious Heat Energy Deficiency. Treatment should be based primarily on applying Heat Sources, supplemented by Antui and other health maintenance methods. First of all, through External and Internal Heat Sources, mainly applying ginger powder, ginger powder paste, or ginger soup at the location of Tishang, warm the tissues and organs directly to ameliorate Heat Energy Deficiency. Then Antui the Yuan Shi Tong Dian corresponding to the Symptoms of disease and illness and apply External Heat Sources to Wenfu the Yuan Shi Dian. If there is no immediate improvement with Antui, one should then Antui the tender points of the Affected Area and apply External Heat Sources to Wenfu the Affected Area. In this way, the functioning of tissues and organs can be improved, and the warming effect of the ginger can be sustained.

Further, depending on the requirement of the patient’s condition and under the circumstances that the patient can tolerate, Wenfu can be enhanced to become a hot compress. Additionally, in daily living, the patient must actively engage in improving mood and stamina through appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and a good state of mind to enhance the body’s innate immunity and self-healing power. With such diagnosis and treatment, the healing of disease and illness can be accelerated, and the patient with severe disease and illness can turn from peril to safety.

Regarding the treatment methods above, except for Antui, which belongs to medical treatment, the rest are health maintenance methods. It can be seen that in treating severe disease and illness, health maintenance is emphasized first and foremost. That is, through Heat Sources and other health maintenance methods, Heat Energy Deficiency is ameliorated to safeguard life. Medical treatment, i.e., through Antui to resolve Tishang for treating disease and illness, is secondary. In addition, not only should invasive treatments and any medicine of cold and cooling nature be avoided as much as possible, but the indoor environment must be kept warm, comfortable, tranquil, tidy, clean, and well-ventilated. This serves to help repair Tishang and cement the curative effect.

1. External and Internal Heat Sources:

External and Internal Heat Sources must be used in combination in treating patients with severe disease and illness. External Heat Sources include sunlight, moxibustion, hot water bags, red bean bags, warmers, various electric heating products, ginger powder, ginger powder paste, and ginger soup. Among these, ginger powder, ginger powder paste, and ginger soup can be smeared or sprayed to a large area at the location of Tishang to be absorbed by the skin to warm the body directly.

Internal Heat Sources include ginger slices, ginger powder, ginger powder paste, ginger soup, ginseng slices, ginseng powder, ginseng soup, chili, pepper, Sichuan pepper (huajiao), and curry. They can be used as seasonings in the diet so that any ingredient can be cooked as a diet of hot and warming nature to facilitate the body’s absorption and conversion of food into Heat Energy. Among these, ginger powder, ginger powder paste, and ginger soup can be consumed by themselves to improve the body constitution comprehensively. They can also be used for enemas, and cleansing, spraying, or dripping at nasal and oral cavities, eyes, vagina, and urethra; this enables the Heat Sources to go straight to the Affected Area Tishang and warm the organs directly. Further, as required by the patient’s condition and under the circumstances that the patient can tolerate, Wenfu can be enhanced to a hot compress. For example, use a mixture of ginger with chili powder (the finer, the better), or with concentrated soup boiled from chili (plus Sichuan pepper) to change the medicinal properties of ginger from warm to hot; or adjust the electric heater or electric blanket to a high temperature.

In short, as an External and Internal Heat Source, ginger not only should be applied at the location of Tishang to warm the tissues and organs directly, but there must be coordination with Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian or the tender points of the Affected Area and other External Heat Sources such as warmers, red bean bags, and electric heating devices. In addition, in daily life, one must exercise, rest, and maintain a good state of mind. With these methods, the body’s immunity and selfhealing ability can be enhanced to ameliorate Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency to achieve the goals of safeguarding life and healing disease and illness. But there are no hard and fast rules. The supreme principle of all uses of External and Internal Heat Sources is what the patient can accept and absorb and that the patient’s condition improves.

(1) External Heat Sources

For patients with severe disease and illness, Wenfu can be up to 24 hours. The living environment should be kept tranquil, tidy, clean, and well-ventilated, and it is best that the patient feels warm and comfortable. If the weather is too hot or too cold, air conditioning or heating can be used to adjust room temperature.

In clinical practice, to treat Symptoms and Signs of disease and illness and even abnormal forms, first, one can rinse with warm water or use an electric heater at the location of Tishang to sustain the Wenfu; wait until the skin is warmed, then use a little force to smear a large area evenly with ginger powder or ginger powder paste until it dries off. Repeat this procedure two to three times. Then, after rinsing with warm water, use other External Heat Sources such as a hair dryer, an electric heater, or a red bean bag to Wenfu; or use other External Heat Sources directly without rinsing with warm water. After Wenfu, coordinate with Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian and even the tender points of the Affected Area to relieve Symptoms and Signs and abnormal forms caused by Tishang.

It is worth noting that there is often an outflow of blood or tissue fluids from the rupture or original wound of the abnormal forms (including cancerous tumors, fibroids, induration, and lumps) when applying Antui to their surrounding areas to find tender points. This is part of the normal process of repairing Tishang, and due to this process, abnormal forms will disappear faster. But the wound with the outflow of blood or tissue fluids must be cleaned with concentrated ginger soup. Otherwise, the scabs will block the outflow of fluids from the body, so that there will be a recurrence in the patient’s condition, delay in healing, and even leave scars.

In short, in treating the wound, besides using an electric heating device, ginger powder and ginger powder paste can also be used around the wound to Wenfu. Then, coordinate with Antui of the Yuan Shi Tong Dian and the tender points of the Affected Area. Afterwards, use concentrated ginger soup to clean the outflow of blood or tissue fluids from the wound. After the wound is cleaned, it must be kept dry and exposed to air. Avoid bandaging with gauze or plastic wrap and such. If the condition is serious, such as scalds, venom burns, psoriasis, and breast cancer bursts, they can be treated with the above methods multiple times a day. One can also aim an electric heater or far infrared rays at the Affected Area from a safe distance, and do so before going to bed so that the wound can be treated overnight.

In a nutshell, if the patient has no wound, ginger soup, ginger powder, or ginger powder paste can be used. If there is a wound, only ginger soup can be used. However, if the patient feels that concentrated ginger soup is too irritating and is unwilling to accept, as a last resort, one can switch to diluted ginger soup, diluted red ginseng soup, or a combination of diluted ginger and red ginseng soup.

(2) Internal Heat Sources

Internal Heat Sources include ginger soup, ginger powder, and ginger powder paste which not only can be taken alone but can be used in a diet of a warming and hot nature, and enema.

(i) Ginger soup, ginger powder, and ginger powder paste:

To ensure the quality of the ginger, it is best to choose certified organic smaller-sized ginger. Concentrated ginger soup is recommended for patients with severe disease and illness. Ginger soup is made from boiling fresh or dried ginger slices. The regular daily dosage of fresh ginger slices is 500 grams to 750 grams; the upper limit is 1,500 grams. The regular daily dosage of dried ginger slices is 50 grams to 75 grams; the upper limit is 150 grams. Although the medicinal properties of boiled ginger soup using dried ginger are better than using fresh ginger, there are no hard and fast rules. No matter what kind of ingredients, amount, and concentration, etc., one must take into consideration differences among individuals. The method of consumption is small quantities with frequency; sip a small amount while it is warm so that there is steady stream of Heat Source replenishment. If the patient has edema, frequent urination, and excessive phlegm, he or she can take ginger pills, ginger powder, or ginger powder paste instead.

The amount of ginger used by patients with severe disease and illness should be increased gradually and ceased when effective. It can be lower than the recommended regular dosage. Subsequent increase or decrease depends on the patient’s condition. Increasing or exceeding the recommended maximum dosage is allowed only if the condition does not improve after full compliance of Antui, Wenfu, intake of a diet of warming and hot nature, appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and good state of mind, and provided that the increased dosage can be absorbed. But the increased dosage cannot be taken long term. Once the condition has improved and stabilized, it must be reduced gradually to regular dosage. If, upon consuming concentrated ginger soup, the patient with severe disease and illness developed Symptoms and Signs, they are caused by Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. As such, as long as the external treatment of Hands-on Technique and External and Internal Heat Sources are properly applied, the Symptoms and Signs can be resolved. So it is clear that ginger consumption can continue.

However, if the patient has tried his best and still feels that the ginger is too spicy and is reluctant to use it, any and only one of the following: Radix Panacis Quinquefolii (American ginseng), Radix Ginseng Albae (white ginseng), red ginseng, licorice, dried longan, or unrefined cane sugar, etc., can be added to the ginger; or replace concentrated ginger soup directly with concentrated red ginseng soup or ginger pills. This will weaken the medicinal properties of the Internal Heat Source and improve the taste. It is worth mentioning that concentrated red ginseng soup is warm in nature and easier to absorb, and most patients can accept it. Therefore, it has become one of the best options for rescuing and treating patients with severe disease and illness. The normal dosage of red ginseng is 50 grams to 75 grams; the maximum is 150 grams. In short, the supreme principle governing the amount of Internal Heat Sources to use and the strength of their medicinal properties is what the patient can accept and absorb, and if the condition of the patient improves.

It must be emphasized repeatedly that concentrated ginger soup and concentrated red ginseng soup are primarily used to enhance the Heat Source of the daily diet of the patient with severe disease and illness to meet the urgent needs of the body. When the patient with severe disease and illness has fully recovered, the Heat Source requirement can be derived from an appropriate diet and intensification of exercise. If consumption is intended for long-term health maintenance, it should be switched to diluted ginger soup, or diluted red ginseng soup, or a combination of diluted ginger and red ginseng soup.

(ii)   A diet of warming and hot nature

The patient with severe disease and illness should consume a diet of warming and hot nature. The ingredients and seasonings are not limited to those of warming and hot nature, but less cooling and cold seasonings and more warming and hot seasonings to make any ingredient into delicious food of warming and hot nature. That is, cooking with less oil, salt, sugar, and vinegar while adding seasonings of warming and hot nature, such as ginger, chili, pepper, Sichuan pepper (huajiao), curry, etc. Food should be fully cooked, even boiled if necessary, and consumed while it is hot. When eating, chew and swallow slowly; being too full is not advisable, and meals need not be accompanied by soup.

(iii)  Ginger enema

For patients with severe abdominal disease and illness, if applying External and Internal Heat Sources and Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian and the tender points of the Affected Area are ineffective, and the patients’ condition is serious and urgent, it is appropriate to decide promptly to administer ginger powder, ginger powder paste, or ginger soup enema instead. This is due to the principle that ginger is warm and hot in nature and can reach Affected Area Tishang directly when used for an enema. Compared to other External and Internal Heat Sources, ginger is more effective in directly warming the abdominal organs. Meanwhile, one must also coordinate with Antui, External Heat Sources, and other health maintenance methods to enhance the amelioration of Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. With this treatment, Symptoms and Signs including abdominal distension and pain, vomiting, inability to eat, stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, intraabdominal bleeding, dysmenorrhea, uterine prolapse, and frequent urination can self-heal. Laxative and antidiarrheal effects as well as the recovery of stamina can also be achieved. Therefore, it can be seen that ginger enema can quickly heal abdominal Symptoms and Signs, and it is the best method to turn peril to safety for patients with severe disease and illness.

Although using ginger powder, ginger powder paste, ginger powder pills, or ginger soup enema is effective for resolving abdominal Symptoms, ginger soup enema is mainly used to clear intestines and pass stools. Ginger powder mainly warms abdominal organs and is more effective in relieving Symptoms. Regarding ginger powder paste and ginger pills made from ginger powder paste, their efficacy is in between the two. In addition, based on the requirement of the patient’s condition and under the circumstances that the patient can tolerate, a ginger enema can be administered several times a day to enhance the warming of abdominal organs so that disease and illness can be healed quickly. But no matter how good the method, the supreme principle is what the patient can accept and absorb and that the patient’s condition improves.

2. Appropriate Exercise:

There are signs of peril for patients with severe disease and illness, and their lives are in danger. The use of Heat Sources and Antui alone will ultimately fail without the coordination of the body (exercise) and mind (mood and concepts). The types of exercise include stretching, calisthenics, tai chi chuan, yoga, hiking, climbing of stairs, push-ups, etc. One can target Symptoms and Signs in different areas of the body and select a type of exercise that helps with recovery. For example, for Symptoms such as cough, chest tightness, and hand numbness, one can select push-ups. For Symptoms such as leg numbness, knee pain, and ankle pain, one can choose to climb stairs (two steps at a time).

It is better to avoid exercising outdoors when the weather is too cold or too hot. For those who perspire easily or are afraid of the cold, towels may be placed around the neck and the front and back of the body. It will keep the body warm and can be easily removed when wet, thus keeping the body and clothing dry at all times.

The key to success in exercise is persistence, one cannot “sun it for one day and freeze it for ten” (do it off and on), and it should be done according to one’s physical ability. If there is a desire to increase the amount, careful assessment is needed to confirm that it is safe before increasing gradually and slowly. Otherwise, excessive exercise not only cannot improve the functioning of tissues and organs and aid in recovery, but it will also consume a great deal of Heat Energy and even endanger life.

In short, the main daily activities for patients with severe disease and illness are exercise and rest. They should relax the body, slow down to regulate the breath, be active anytime, avoid fatigue, sleep when tired, but it is not advisable to lie down or sit for too long. If these practices are implemented, and when Heat Energy is gradually replenished, stamina improves, and Tishang is ameliorated, various Symptoms and Signs of disease and illness can be healed naturally.

3.  Adequate Rest:

Patients with severe disease and illness need adequate rest. They should not travel long-distance and become fatigued due to travel. They also should not be engaged in heavy workloads and be overly exhausted. Although adequate rest is very important, it is not suitable to be sedentary, lie down, or sit for an extended period. In addition, they should maintain regularity in daily life. Staying up late should be avoided. It is best to go to bed early, wake up naturally, avoid lounging in bed when awake, and abstain from sexual activities.

4.  Good State of Mind:

Patients with severe disease and illness are easily susceptible to depression. In the face of their disease and illness, they may have fears, feel stressed, and urgently seek recovery. Such a tense mood will consume the already insufficient Heat Energy and hurt the body even more. To maintain inner peace, one must firmly believe in cause and effect and understand that disease and illness are the Effects caused by Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. Therefore, as long as the Causes improve, the Effects will disappear. If this is clearly understood, one would not need to be overly concerned about the condition of the disease and illness. Wholeheartedly let go of fearful thoughts and worries about the disease and illness. Even if one encounters various malignant diseases and illnesses, it is still necessary to firmly believe that treating from the Cause is the fundamental solution. If things don’t turn out the way one has hoped, that is, if after the treatment of YSD medicine, Symptoms or Signs worsen and stamina declines, one must calmly reflect: Is this because External and Internal Heat Sources are not reaching the location of Tishang directly? Are Antui or exercise not properly applied? Could it be that concepts are not clear or mood swings are too extreme? Is it excessive fatigue? Or are they normal phenomena that may appear sometimes in the process of repairing Tishang? Or is this beyond the scope of the body’s selfhealing? Be timely in clarifying the truth, make correct judgments and take corrective action if there is any deviation. Otherwise, if one were to take a shortcut by using diet and medicine of cold and cooling nature or surgery for speedy recovery and not be careful, it would lead to serious exhaustion of Heat Energy and the endangerment of one’s life. In short, the patient with severe disease and illness should be clear-minded, reflective, introspective, and often embrace one’s heart with joy, gratitude, and tolerance. Avoid huge mood swings and absolutely must not harbor muddled thoughts that cause oneself to be psychologically entangled. If there are negative emotions, it is appropriate for family members to observe, enlighten, and give encouragement at any time. If the patient’s condition improves and there is energy left, it is best to engage others with compassion and rejoice in helping others.

Finally, although the patient with severe disease and illness need not be overly worried about the condition of disease and illness, one should not take lightly even if the condition of disease and illness improves. The patient who recovers from severe disease and illness is still frail, therefore should not resume normal diet and daily lifestyle immediately, but should implement health maintenance methods according to the principles described above; one must especially avoid cold and coolness as well as fatigue. The amount of exercise, in particular, must be intensified. Keep a relaxed heart and mind, fundamentally enhance the body constitution and prevent recurrence.
